Motherwell and St Mirren played out a goalless draw in a swirling wind in Paisley.
Motherwell’s almost complete domination of the first half failed to produce a goal and St Mirren will feel unlucky that their second half attempts were foiled by Callum Ward.
Liam Gordon and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos were missing from the ‘Well line-up as Stephen O’Donnell and Ibrahim Said were given starting places. O’Donnell paired with Paul McGinn in centre of defence while Said impressed with his bustling efforts up front.
Fans in the North stand were treated to a fine display of passing football from Motherwell. Distribution was at times calm and at others quick as the ball was moved from back to front. All that was missing was the final killing touch. The home side had to resort to brutal tactics to stem the flow and it was no surprise that they had racked up five bookings by the end of the match.
Slattery forced a save from this free kick
Said had the best chance of the opening half but his shot from a tight angle was held by George.
The antics of Stephen Robinson on the touchline made it no surprise to see a couple of half time substitutions and a further three with more than twenty minutes remaining. Whether it was those changes or a loss of concentration from Motherwell that was the cause, the home side began to apply pressure.
Ward produced several good stops including a tip over the bar that deflected a close range goal-bound header following a corner. He followed that with another save this time from Keanu Bacchus.
A concern for Jens Berthel Askou was the injury that caused Johnny Koutroumbis to be substituted just before the break. Tom Sparrow stood in but was far less effective.
Still, there can be few complaints after taking an point on the road and securing a clean sheet.
Next up is the League Cup second round tie in Perth.
