Motherwell and Celtic met each other for the second week in a row but it was the visitors that secured the three points they needed to restore their title hopes ahead of Wednesday's Old Firm encounter.

The Bhoys gave themselves a massive boost to their confidence as they gained revenge for last week's 1-0 defeat to the Steelmen with a comfortable victory at Fir Park.

They got off to a great start with Aiden McGeady and Scott McDonald firing wide before they took the lead on 17 minutes.

Shunsuke Nakamura's free-kick from the right was flapped at by Motherwell keeper Graeme Smith who was under pressure from Gary Caldwell. The ball fell kindly for Stephen McManus to head home from close range.

Moments later McDonald somehow headed wide from only six yards out and Celtic were punished for the miss almost immediately.

A sweeping Motherwell move involving Ross McCormack and Stephen Hughes ended with the Welsh striker sliding his shot under Artur Boruc and the ball was finally being forced over the line by McManus as he tried to clear.

The game was flowing from end to end but it was Celtic that found the net on two more occasions before the break.

On 30 minutes Nakamura's cross was headed into the air by Stephen Craigan and it fell kindly for McDonald to hit a first-time shot past Graeme Smith with the aid of a slight deflection.

Just before the break they made it three when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink rose unmarked to bullet a header into the net from Barry Robson's corner.

Celtic ended the game as a contest 12 minutes after the break when they added a fourth goal. A long throw from the left fell kindly for Vennegoor of Hesselink who turned and shot in one movement to leave Graeme Smith helpless again.

Motherwell plugged away and Boruc had to produce a top-quality save to keep the score at 4-1. Hughes left a trail of Celtic defenders in his wake as he burst from midfield only to be denied by Boruc's diving save to his right.

In the end Celtic held on for a convincing victory that keeps their title hopes alive ahead of Wednesday's fixture.
