Motherwell and Dundee United fire blanks

Last Updated : 13-Dec-2025 by John Wilson

Motherwell recorded a fifth straight clean sheet but failed to score at Tannadice and had to settle for a goalless draw.

Neither side merited three points after uninspiring afternoon that saw hard graft outshine silky soccer.  Motherwell tried to establish their usual possession based style while Dundee United took a more direct approach.

On this occasion Jens Berthel Askou made three changes with Callum Hendry, Callum Slattery and Stephen Welsh making the starting eleven.

There were few goalmouth incidents in the first half other than a weak header from Hendry early in the game and a long range effort from Elliot Watt that flew high.  United missed the best chance when Max Watters got on the end of a long ball just before the break.  He escaped the attention of Callum Ward but with the empty goal awaiting he rolled the ball wide of the post.

The game was interrupted after 15 minutes when Welsh and Watt clashed heads in the middle of the pitch.  Watt was soon on his feet but after a long treatment session Welsh left for the dressing room.  Liam Gordon filled his place beside Paul McGinn.

There was more life to the second half though the goalkeepers had few stops to make.  Motherwell had plenty of the ball in the opening period and both Slattery and Hendry tried their luck from distance.

Both managers turned to their benches but inspiration was there none.  Ibrahim Said produced some magic on the right touchline and he set up Slattery for a shot over the top.

The home side also had a few moments to lift their supporters.  Several long throws tested the stout ‘Well defence.

Throughout the afternoon the United front men

stood off Ward when he had the ball at his feet.   As a result we saw the unusual sight of the Motherwell ‘keeper firing long from the box.

The game had few passages of play that were not broken by Duncan Nicholson’s whistle.  He managed to irritate both sets of fans.

Motherwell will aim for a sixth clean sheet when Dundee visit Fir Park next week.  Let’s hope we can score a goal or two!
