Motherwell B were well beaten by second division Clyde at New Douglas Park.
This was the third of the six games in the first phase of the KDM Evolution Trophy (formerly known as the Challenge Cup). Progression to the next stage requires a finish in the top 22 of the 30 team league and the B side are struggling with only one point gained so far.
This was a one sided contest as the senior team ran out comfortable winners. They were three up at the break and but for a fine performance from Colbi Mcquarrie in the ‘Well goal it could have been worse. The yoing side did better in the second half and held out until the 80th minute before conceding the fourth.
Another save by Mcquarrie
It was clear that the methods of the first team had been passed to the visitors. The ball was mostly played out from the back though there were a few scary losses of possession. The boys stuck to their task throughout.
Mcquarrie was tested early with a powerful shot from the edge of the box and he was happy to concede a corner. Unfortunately he was unable to hold a 20 yard free kick in the 15th minutes and the ball fell to James Hilton for a easy tap-in. Later he made stops with outstretched arm and lunging foot as the home side picked up their momentum.
A downward header from close range doubled Clyde’s lead. Motherwell replied with a chance for Robbie Hunter. He was through on goal but a defensive block squashed his shot.
Shortly before the break a fine passing move from back to front saw Andrew Arnott come in on the left but his effort was weak. Motherwell earned their first corner but number three was lost after the defence refused to clear and Nevins scored.
The second period saw a bit more attacking from Motherwell B and a Rocco McColn free kick flew over the bar. Zander Mcallister had the best chance but his shot was saved from close range.
Clyde scored a fourth ten minutes from time when Kyle Connell slammed home his second of the afternoon.
The young team head from Stranraer on Tuesday with work to do if they are to make the cut.
