However, with a makeshift backline of Boyd, Hendry and Cunningham, the home side made a nervous start and fell a goal behind when a decent shot through a crowded penalty area beat an unsighted Graeme Farmer in the home goal.

FPC regained their composure and set out to find an equaliser. Top scorer Joseph Lynas hit both posts in the space of a minute after two excellent solo runs but the Ayrshire side held firm until the interval despite constant pressure from the Motherwell boys.

The second half was a few minutes old when a mix-up between substitute Graeme Ramage and Ross Cunningham resulted in the ball falling perfectly for Ayr snap up the second.

The Corner felt it was going to be another one of those days when Fraser Lang rounded the goalkeeper superbly only to be denied by the inside of the post but Joseph Lynas finally found his shooting boots after being sent clear by Ross Galloway to pull a goal back. It was worth the wait and seemed to open the floodgates as the goal of the game followed a few minutes later.

Gerard Maguire chased a long ball through the middle, controlled it magnificently and blasted an unstoppable strike into the net. The celebration was as good as the goal itself and the big striker clearly enjoyed his strike.

Goal number three was another belter. Cunningham picked up the ball up on the edge of his own box. When he looked up to find a team-mate, he noticed a space opening up in front of him. He drove into that space, took on two defenders and beat the goalkeeper from the edge of the box. The relief in the FPC camp was evident as there was only going to be one winner from then on.

Late substitute Davie Tonner completed the rout with a close range brace in the last five minutes to cap a great team performance from Fraser's troops. The boys go into next weeks final league match with Raith Rovers on a high, looking to end the campaign with a victory to ensure the title race goes right to the wire.
