WorldNet 2005: Saturday

Everyone just about made the 11am meeting point at Jack Daniels on Friday morning and after a quick couple of rounds, bags were squeezed into boots and carry outs loaded onto back seats and a fragmented convoy set off. There were surprisingly few disasters on the way down and the team arrived at Boddington Hall in desperate need of the residents’ dinner. The food was unspectacular but free and afterwards the team set off to Leeds city centre for a couple of jars. Sadly there are no amusing stories which could be published here but a good time was had by all.

Mitch suffering already
The team crawled out of their collective pit to take on Ayr in the first league game at 11am. Frazzle had decided to go for a slightly more defensive formation and the tactics worked a treat. Goals from Ross and lone front man Joe gave the team a 2-0 win and an excellent start to the day.

Dunfermline were up next in a friendly and the result should have been safer than the eventually 2-1 full time score suggested. Millwall were the next league game and the first flaws emerged. The team performed admirably against one of the best IFA teams but an absolute tonne of missed chances came back to bite the team when the Lions scored a late winner against the run of play.

Disaster strikes!
That loss meant that the team needed to beat Hearts in the final game to qualify for the cup knockout tournament. An early goal provided hope and Hearts fought back to lead 2-1 at half time. A comedic own goal by Ross was to prove the killer blow and even a late consolation goal could not salvage things.

However, the team had done enough to secure third place in the group and a seeded position in the plate draw – always the target when it comes to the league stage.

The final game of the day was another friendly and a relaxed 0-0 draw was played out against Doncaster Rovers. The full time whistle signalled shower time and the team trooped back to the halls fairly satisfied with the days work.

For the first time the team were heading out for a group dinner and a very reasonable Chinese Buffet was arranged by Speedie. Wonderfully the buffet was also being enjoyed by a sizable hen night…the day was only getting better! Saturday night in Leeds was a bit quieter than the Friday, not helped by the attitude of some bouncers. Some headed back home at respectable (ish) time whilst a few managed to represent the team to the hilt again – no doubt grateful that the first Sunday game was at 9am rather than 8am. Welling United would provide the opposition…would our stars be able to over come their hangovers?
