No.5 Davie Cooper

Already a legend thanks to a glittering career at Ibrox, Davie Cooper could easily have seen out his time in the reserves with nothing to prove to anyone. It was a measure of the man's will to play and entertain that he refused to go out with a whimper and instead chose to sign for Motherwell to show that he still had it - and howl!!!!!

Davie turned us from perennial relegation strugglers into a mid-table passing outfit with his tremendous vision and exquisite left foot turning players, such as Tommy Boyd and Phil O'Donnell, into modern day stars and practically funding the renovation of Fir Park as a result.

The icing on the cake was undoubtedly his contribution in bringing the Scottish Cup back to Motherwell for the first time in 39 years, coupled with his recall to the Scotland team, with only injury denying him participation in Italia 90. No mean achievements for a 33 year old who was supposed to be merely making one last move for the money.

In the four years he graced the Claret and Amber jersey it has given me the opportunity to say that I have seen a true legend, if not tragically, an immortal play for the 'Well.Coop was a true gentleman and a superstar whose sublime skill and trickery was a joy to behold. The fact that a stand has been named in his memory is a lasting and fitting tribute to the impact that Davie Cooper made at MotherwellFootball Club.
