GLF 48: Top Ten Ted - Games I'm Glad I Missed

Last updated : 26 May 2003 By GLF

Top Ten Ted, Presents,

Games I’m so glad I missed !!!!!

10. April 2003, Dunfermline Ath. (Away)

All set to visit the Kingdom with a tad more excitement than usual. A visit to my bank for some funds, and we were off, but unbelievably the computer was down and it wouldn’t accept my pin No. After three different banks and the clock at 1.45, our day out was abandoned. A couple of hours later sitting in the garden, I switched off the commentary and sparked open a beer!

Dunfermline Ath. 3-0 Motherwell

9. March 2000, Rangers (Away)

My sons birthday party was on this date and a trip to the flicks was where the army of kids were heading. All through the film my mind was drifting 10 Miles up the road to Castle Greyskull. I began for some reason to think I’d missed a famous victory. Alas, despite Porn Star Curcic in the side, we lost more goals to Rangers than I’ve ever seen. Thank god I missed that one.

Rangers 6-2 Motherwell

8. Feb. 2000, Kilmarnock (Home)

Working in Manchester, I was out on tiles on this particular evening. Every 15 Mins. or so, I’d slip away to the room to check teletext for the latest happenings. I got more and more inconsolable the more visits I had to my room that night. It must’ve been a nightmare. It isn’t for me though. I wasn’t there.

Motherwell 0-4 Kilmarnock

7. Feb. 1983, Clyde (Home)

On the Saturday at Shawfield I saw an uninspiring 0-0 draw against lower level opposition that showed none of the danger to be had at Fir Park, in a midweek tie I’d miss, for the replay. Apparently a Nevin inspired Clyde blew a Bobby Flavell??? inspired Motherwell away, and out of the Scottish Cup. To me, It didn’t happen It was all made up.

Motherwell 3-4 Clyde

6. Feb. 2000, Ayr United (Home)

This time I was “Helpless in Huyton”(Liverpool), and catching some snippets from a very weak Radio Scotland on a very dodgy car radio. It eventually said something like Neil Tarrant ran amok!!! Having seen NT in action since, and the fact that I can’t get any of my mates to talk about this particular Q/F clash, I can only assume it didn’t happen.

Motherwell 3-4 Ayr United

5. Oct. 1997, Dundee United(Away)

At a time when I very rarely missed a Motherwell game, a dislocated shoulder on the Thursday stop me visiting Tannadice on the Saturday. No sooner had the Kick-Off been announced when the radio screamed that a mix-up between Woods and Christie(surely not!!) had resulted in a goal for United. A few beers sitting in the sun numbed a bad afternoon.

Dundee Utd 4-0 Motherwell.

4. Feb. 2001, Celtic (Away)

A narrow defeat at Parkhead doesn’t seem to have a place in a list like this. I didn’t go because all I could see was a heavy defeat on the horizon, but a rear guard action orchestrated by Townsley had seen the team nudge to within 10 mins. of a superb result. I really felt for the small Motherwell support that night.

Celtic 1-0 Motherwell

3. Feb. 1978, Queens’ Park (Home)

Don’t know why I missed this Cup Tie, but boy, I’m so glad I did!! Motherwell were on the slide by this time and believe it or not QP were no mugs, but there was simply no excuse for this, and did I get some abuse at school next day!!!

Motherwell 1-4 Queens’ Park

2. Aug. 1985, Hibernian (Away)

I was in Ibiza when this League Cup Tie was played. I remember ‘Phoning my Mum to find out the result. She excitedly told me that “Motherwell have won”. My joy was short-lived when she completed the sentence with “Hibs have Six”. Broken-Hearted I retreated to several San Antonio Bars.

Hibernian 6-1 Motherwell

1. April 1991, Aberdeen (Away)

A Motherwell team not unlike the side at the moment, travelled to a midweek fixture at Pittodrie full of youthful enthusiasm. Ally McLeod had publicly announced we were heading for the drop and ditched all the experienced pros. After a couple of promising results he felt confident enough to let the kids take on the top team in Scotland. One big mistake. What a hell of a journey home that must’ve been for any guys that made that trip. The Club should’ve struck medals for you.

Aberdeen 8-0 Motherwell

There you have it, 10 games that I know I would’ve been at in different circumstances, but delighted not to have in my memory to “mull” over when I get half drunk and depressed at how things are going down Fir Park way. Don’t think I’m getting off lightly, there are other games which I’ve seen and torture myself about, that you’ve maybe missed, it’s just the way things are. Until the next time, keep the faith.

TOP TEN TED.
