Great Right Sided Midfielders Of My Time
10. Derek Townsley, 47 (18) Apps, 8 Goals
Joining from Queen of the South (the finest name in Scottish football),
9. Brian Wright, 76 (10) Apps, 7 Goals
Brian was a right good footballer, if a bit slow, who had the cracking middle name of Vincent. Never seemed to dominate a game in the way good midfielders do. Brian joined up at
8. Iain Angus, 83 (19) Apps, 10 Goals
This guy was a strange one. When he arrived via
7. Billy Campbell, 105 (5) Apps, 13 Goals
This Ulsterman was the first winger I saw in the flesh, and like all good outside men he was either hot to trot or not. Fortunately for him and Motherwell fans, his good days well outnumbered his bad ones. Billy had a successful spell at Dundee before coming to Motherwell in a swap deal which saw Jimmy Wilson go to Tayside. Billy, as you might expect, had pace to burn and an ability to deliver a pinpoint cross to the advantage of the Motherwell strike force. Left Fir Park after three years to return home with Glenavon.
6. Tom Donnelly, 97 (3) Apps, 13 Goals
A really classy player who played the roll of the nice guy next to big bad Tom Forsyth in the Motherwell midfield of the early seventies. Tom always had a clean cut look and always seemed to be resplendent in his all Amber kit no matter how muddy the park seemed to be. A great passer of the ball who did everything on the pitch neat and tidy.
5. Ged Brannan, 91 (1) Apps, 18 Goals
The Cayman Islands legend had his critics at
4. Stevie Kirk, 207 (82) Apps, 74 Goals
What can I say about the legend of Stevie Kirk that you've never heard before ? His list of achievements are truly awe-inspiring. Goalkeeping heroics aplenty, four goals in one Premier League match, scoring the winner in a Scottish Cup Final, netting in both the UEFA Cup and European Cup Winners Cup, running the length of Tynecastle to score as good a goal as you're likely to see anywhere, scoring against Liverpool in our Centenary match, a career scoring against every Scottish club (including us !!, except Rangers) and most famously getting Billy Abercrombie sent off three times in one game. Altogether now, “Abercrombie, Abercrombie, Off, Off, Off” !!
3. Billy Davies, 108 (29) Apps, 11 Goals
Billy done time with a few clubs without hitting the big stage. Of course he entered the big time at
2. Bobby Russell, 127 (25) Apps, 18 Goals
Bobby “The Shimmy King” Russell was always a class act. Rangers fans knew it, the media pack knew it, and Motherwell fans knew it. Only we refused to believe it until Bobby pulled on the famous Claret and Amber shirt. Bobby was the architect (and scorer !!) of our victory over the light blue brigade from Ibrox that took us to the top of the Premier League for the first time in my career as a ‘Well fan. The legend of the Shimmy King was born in the East End of Glasgow, when Bobby turned the Celtic defence inside out six times (at least !!) before netting the winner for the Steelmen after being a goal down. A tragedy that he had to sit out the Cup Final in 1991, as I'm sure he would've set up another three goals at least. A pure joy to watch.
1.Johnny Gahagan, 224 (113) Apps, 43 Goals
