A big week ahead for Motherwell

It is expected that the club will unveil Mark McGhee's successor in the next few days and the leaks suggest that Jim Gannon will be our new manager. His former club, Stockport County, went into administration and following the cost cutting measures which are all to familiar to 'Well fans, he was made redundant at the beginning of May.

The words 'highly regarded' seem to appear regularly when his name is mentioned and he left County to the dismay of many of their fans. His assistant, Peter Ward left at the same time.

The new man will have some quick decisions to make. On Thursday we play Llanelli in the first competitive game of the season. Not many managers make their debut in European competition but that distinction awaits our new appointee. He won't be faced with much of a problem in selecting his first starting eleven such is the size of our first team squad but he will have to act quickly to secure our prize asset.

Steven Hughes's remarks in the Sun suggest that it would not take a lot to convince him to stay. "But I haven't ruled out staying at Motherwell, I have a lot to think about. My wee boy's settled at school and my wife is also settled at university, so these are factors I will have to consider. I don't want to rule anything out, and the next seven days should decide it for me. As far as Motherwell is concerned it will help when I see who is coming in. They've been linked with a number of good managers and hopefully they can make the right appointment."

Since the end of last season there as been little in the way of good news stories for Motherwell fans. Now we have green shoots of recovery established on the rejuvenated Fir Park pitch, the prospect of a new leader and a win in the Europa league to anticipate.

Come on ye 'Well.
