Few of the Motherwell fans who froze in the away shed at Pittodrie would share his analysis. The last three outings have produced a terrible trio of football experiences for the fans. Against Aberdeen it was evident early on that the partnership of Porter and Murphy was unlikely to bear fruit. They rarely combined and for most of the game Porter looked like an isolated target man.

The midfield struggled to deliver accurate passing and the defence seemed content to lump the ball forward any opportunity. It was a depressing day with little sign of an improvement likely to appear soon. If anything it underlined just how much we've been missing Clarkson.

We'll have a diversion from the SPL gloom this week as the draw for the fourth round of the cup takes place at Hampden on Monday afternoon. Along with the rest of the 'big teams' will be several non-league minnows. The ties are due to be played on the weekend of 10 January and it may be that plans for an away day to
Elgin, Forres or Inverurie begin shortly after the 2.30pm draw.

Given our current league form it seems likely that a decent cup run will be the only hope of success in 2008/9.
