Betfred Cup underway

Last updated : 14 July 2018 By Firparkcorner

The Betfred Cup got underway on Saturday with Motherwell left on the sidelines as the other four teams in Group G were in action.  We will join the competition on Tuesday when Edinburgh City visit Fir Park.

Queen of the South overcame an early two goal deficit to top the table with a 5-3 win over Stranraer.  Edinburgh City left Broadwood with two points as they won the penalty shootout following a 1-1 with Clyde.

Tuesday will bring memories of our first meeting with Edinburgh City.  A year ago we struggled to overcome the League Two side in front of 970 fans at Ainslie Park.  Late goals from Cadden and Frear robbed the part timers of a shock result. (Report here).

Despite that close shave the team led us to the final in November.   We were unbeaten in the group stage overcoming Queen’s Park, Morton, Berwick Rangers and Edinburgh City before dismissing Ross County, Aberdeen and Rangers on the way to the Hampden final.

Before we are tempted to consider another successful cup run there are four games in a fortnight to win before the knockout stage.  The schedule is

Tuesday 17 July, Edinburgh City (h),

Saturday 21 July, Stranraer (a),

Tuesday 24 July, Queen of the South (h) and

Saturday 28 July, Clyde (a).

All the games are pay at the gate, £12 for adults and £6 for concessions.

A reminder that the FirParkCorner Prediction League is now open.  Everyone welcome here.
