Butcher & McCart - Four Years In

Last updated : 16 October 2005 By Firparkcorner

On the afternoon of 16 October 2001 the club called a press conference. The search for a replacement for Billy Davies was over. After a month with Softy and Mio in charge, the chief executive ushered Eric Black to the platform. He was then joined by Terry Butcher, Chris McCart and George Adams. They stayed in place until the club was placed in interim administration.

In charge for a month
There was some surprise at the appointments. Eric Black was an untested manager though he came with some reputation as a coach. Terry Butcher’s appearance caused some debate among the fans. He had gained managerial experience in England but he was still regarded by many as the ex-captain of Rangers and it took some time for that label to be dispelled.

George Adams and Chris McCart had been part of Celtic’s youth development setup and the pair were highly rated. George overhauled our youth organisation before leaving for Rangers and Chris is now in charge of bringing on the next generations of ‘Well players. McCart’s appointment was welcomed as it was felt to be important that someone with knowledge of the club’s history should be involved in the management team.

Terry stepped into the breach in April 2002 when the administrators were appointed. Nevin, and Black had gone the club was being run on a shoestring. McCart and Butcher took on many backroom tasks and the pair worked wonders.

B&B at training

Since then Terry has had an impressive record. We have had two top six finished and a Hampden final to entertain us. In addition we have a young crop of local youngsters in place which has the potential to keep the club moving forward for years to come.

Let’s hope that Terry and Chris are there for another four years!
