We can take heart at the quality of football on show in the last couple of games despite the unfavourable results. At Parkhead we showed that Motherwell are capable of playing the passing game but, again, our inability to convert opportunities into goals proved to be fatal.

A second half attack
There were signs that Kerr and Vaducz are building an understanding in midfield while the successful partnership of Craigan and Reynolds in central defence will give Malpas a problem when McLean eventually regains his fitness. Persuading the Hungarian to stay could be key to next season's chances especially if Kerr carries out his threat to leave.

Quite what Malpas will do to solve the problem in the striking department is not clear. Jamie Murphy's first team debut on Saturday, while welcome, does not mean that he will figure largely in next season's plans.

Our points tally as we reach the split is a disappointing 36 points. Last season, again in the bottom half of the table, was 44 at the same stage. Still, if this year is regarded as a transitional year under new management it may be regarded as success enough to avoid the relegation dogfight.
