His fellow striker Ross McCormack picked up the young player award. The evening's compare Tam Cowan asked him if he would be around next season and the question was met with a deafening silence suggesting he could be on his way to pastures new. Cowan then repeated the question asking which of his team-mates thought he would be here and only four hands raised after a long pause. They were two hands apiece from Porter and the goalie, Graeme Smith.

The rest of the evening was a fantastic spectacle for the fans. After some opening quips Cowan showed a video of highlights from the season. This included some of the great goals and perhaps none more so than McGarry's on the opening day at Love Street.

Mark McGhee then spoke about the season and he stated that he expected to cull the squad from that inherited from Malpas however was pleasantly surprised with the quality of player he had. He publicly congratulated the players for achieving third spot but said he was not surprised after seeing the quality preseason.

The sponsors of half the players' shirts were then presented with their strips from the season just past.

After a buffet guest speaker Willie Young entertained the capacity crowd with some anecdotes of his life as a referee and a barrister. Highlights included games involving players and managers such as Gascoigne, Di Canio and Advocaat. Willie concluded his speech by encouraging players and fans alike to enjoy the European adventure to come and congratulating us for making it.

A video montage of Phil O'Donnell followed showing some of the highlights of his career. This moving tribute to a legend concluded with the last goal he scored against Kilmarnock back in November. At the end of this video came a standing ovation from the fans in attendance. Phil's brother, elder daughter and David Clarkson then presented the sponsors of his shirts with their shirts.

The remainder of the squad then presented their shirts to their sponsors. A highlight was the tongue in cheek standing ovation the squad gave Martin Grehan when we went onto the stage to present his. Whilst insignificant in the grand scheme of things it did show the camaraderie amongst the squad.

An auction raised thousands as lots including the chance to play in the O'Donnell tribute game, a Hamilton Park racecourse experience and a signed Newcastle strip were offered to the capacity crowd.

The conclusion of the evening was the presentation of awards. Afterwards came an opportunity to mingle but only after a Graeme Smith led chant of Motherwell. The goalie had maybe enjoyed a bottle of Miller too many but he and every other member of the squad have earned it.

Each and every player needs to be credited for their willingness to speak to the fans tonight and as fans we should take the opportunity to thank them for a great season and hope we can retain their services and kick on to a fabulous 2008/09.
