If John Sutton can build on his impressive debut we will be more than pleased with his signing. He adds height to both attack and defence and as he develops an understanding with his striking partners we can be confident that goals will come.

What happens next?

Despite the presence of two target men up front we resisted the temptation to resort to a long ball game. For the most part the ball was passed though the hardworking midfielders on the way to the strikers. Both wing-backs used their licence to advance up the flanks and deliver tempting crosses into the danger area.

McGhee is right to point out that we don't need to be in the top six now, or next week and that what matters is the position at the end of the season. There are enough signs to suggest that the potential is still there.

We knew that the opening run of fixtures would be tough and so it has proved. Our next game is at Easter Road where we will probably find more resistance than Hibs offered on the last day of 2007/8 when we cruised to an easy 2-0 win.

After the trip to Edinburgh comes an international weekend then the Old Firm double header. There's no reason to fear any of those encounters and there is every reason to expect that we'll soon be making a move up the table.
