End of season Fanzone

Season highlight

I assume that’s not a serious question.

Season lowlight

That shouldn’t be a serious question having lost to Albion Rovers in the Scottish Cup, but throwing away the League Cup when it was on a plate for us if we beat 10-man Aberdeen and being utterly dismantled 5-1 at Tannadice at least makes it a debate.

Manager's report card

Stuart McCall did superbly well in summer to replace several key players who seemed irreplaceable. While Sutton did score Higdon’s goals, the other changes were more subtle and reflected a new balance in the team. For long spells of the year we no longer bothered defending, for example.  10/10 for the league, 1/10 for the cups.

Player of the season

Hard one to call but Keith Lasley probably deserves it. A couple of years ago he looked to be getting half a yard slower which resulted in three red cards in the space of a few months. Suddenly he seems one of the fittest guys in the team, despite his age, and his desire to go the extra mile drives everyone else forward.

Expectations for next season

This could be cut and pasted from last year – we surely can’t expect to maintain this level of performance. Unlike Aberdeen, we know our place in the grand scheme of things so top six and – please oh please – finally doing something in the cups would thrill us. The financial difference in Europe is too big to compete, that’s just a working holiday.

What needs to be on the club's summer shopping list?

A new goalkeeper.  Sadly, neither Lee Hollis or Gunnar Nielsen are good enough despite some good moments on occasion. If we still had Darren Randolph we’d have had second sewn up by early March.

What will your overriding memory of the campaign be?

In due time, therapy will scratch out the Albion Rovers debacle and leave only Craig Reid thumping the ball high into the Pittodrie net.

If the board could do one thing to improve your club what would it be?

It needs to find a way of engaging the local business community to back the Well Society. Even if that means tweaking the rules or the original plan for how the fans would own the club, we need to have a safety net to fall back on. And the Society, whether you believe in it or not right now, seems the only long-term method we have of achieving that.
