Greedy Dons Lose the Plot

Don't be sidetracked by claims about sportsmanship, gentleman's agreements or “damage to our champions league hopes”. The row is about money.

As ever, the carrot dangled by the lure of TV cash has distorted the normal order of the fixture list and that is the root of the problem.

$etanta has chosen to move the Killie v Hibs league match to Monday 15th January and consequently Aberdeen and Hibs settled on Thursday 18th as a preferred replay date. The SPL suggested that the following midweek would be less disruptive but when $ky dangled the fee for live television rights the date was fixed.

Reports suggest that Aberdeen will enjoy a fee in the order of £80 000 for the Thursday match. Their reaction when Motherwell pointed out that a twenty four hour delay to the weekend SPL fixture would cost around £30 000 was a selfish rant.

The idea that Aberdeen should be boosted by £80 000 and that Motherwell, as a result, should accommodate them by moving the SPL game at a cost of £30 000 is ludicrous.

The board at Fir Park have taken much flack for home fans in recent months for their decision to reconfigure the home and away seating arrangements for visits from the Old Firm. It would be foolish of them to volunteer a financial penalty to aid another team.

Calderwood's commented, “The Scottish Cup takes precedence and £80,000 for any club in Scotland nowadays is revenue they can't afford to turn down. Even the Old Firm need that sort of money and anybody in the game should realise how important it is.”

Does he think that Motherwell live in a different world that allows us to take a £30, 000 loss? Get real Jimmy, and take off the red and white glasses.
