Gretna- 24h On

Our haul of ten points from the last four outings has come from games against St Mirren, Inverness, Kilmarnock and Gretna. Although the remaining fixtures in this second cycle will provide a much stiffer test we can take much comfort that our recent form has delivered such a solid platform for the rest of the campaign.

The manager made much of the high level of confidence which characterises the squad at the moment when he talked to the press after the game. Players are always keen to play for a winning team and we the best of them when the pressure is off. Through the years we have seen the toll extracted from players who are involved in relegation struggles and it must feel like a huge weight lifted from their shoulders when they can concentrate on the teams above rather than teams below.

Much was made in earlier weeks of our defensive failings especially from corners and set pieces. The team will be much happier that the recent record show that only one goal has been lost in the last four games. Mark McGhee talked of the lack of height in central defence as being an important factor and there was a fascinating piece in Saturday's GLF fanzine which illustrates the point.

Christopher Hutton looked at the combined height of all the central defensive pairings and demonstrated that the Craigan/Renolds pair is, indeed, the smallest combination in the league. They reach only 11ft 9in between them. The pair with the tallest total is Easter Road duo of Hogg and Jones at 12ft 7in. The full article will appear in the GLF Archive in the next week or so.

We'll face a tough test next week when Hearts host us at Tynecastle. Our last win there was in November 2004 when a Foran penalty separated the teams. The fourth round draw of the Scottish Cup matched us up for another visit to Gorgie in January so there will be an extra bit of interest in this game.
