Hammell called into Scotland squad

Last updated : 31 May 2013 By Firparkcorner

hammyHammell has played an essential role in Motherwell's development in recent years and  the 31 year old is long overdue some recognition at this level.  A decade ago he was a regular in the U21 set up and has a dozen appearances with the young Scots.  He earned his first full cap in 2004 when we lost to Sweden and since then he has played twice for Scotland B.

Apart from a short spell with Southend United he has been at Fir Park since Alex McLeish signed him when he was 15.  He has been a fixture on Motherwell's team sheet for years and is likely to make his 500th appearance in claret and amber next season.

He'll see a few familiar faces when he joins the squad.  His former and current managers, McGhee and McCall, will be assisting Strachan and they will know the contribution e can offer.

Stevie has come to the end of his testimonial year and he must be delighted to end it with this return to the international squad.  His inclusion will ensure a that a few more from Lanarkshire will follow the game next weekend and we'll hope to see our man get some game time.

Congratulations!
