Stuart McCall’s first line when facing the press after the match was “It's the old cliché - if it had been a boxing match it would have been stopped at half-time.” True enough. After the opening spell that ended with what Jimmy Nicol called a “lucky” goal we delivered one of the best attacking half hours of the season – without managing to score.
The word ‘goal’ stuck in the throats of ‘Well fans time and time again as it seemed certain that the ball would cross the line but the goal line defenders kept it out. Letheren and even Gros thwarted our best efforts. Allied to their saves was some poor finishing. Some fine opportunities were fired off target when it looked easier to find the inside of the goal frame.
A left weighted kick off
By the time the madness arrived at the end of the game we had used up all our chances and the game was lost. The loss of discipline shown by Kerr and Lasley was condemned by McCall as “unacceptable”. If we fail to win while they are watching from the sidelines their embarrassment will be magnified.
It was a bad day but McCall was keen to highlight the positive play in the first half. Ojamaa was singled out for praise but credit was also due to the travelling choir. From their vantage point high in the away stand the hardy band kept up a constant delivery of songs and chants to the beat of the drum. The depleted team that will face Inverness for next week's 2nd v 3rd clash at Fir Park will need their backing again.
