Kilmarnock - 24h on

In truth, we were fortunate to take three points in the opener but thanks to St Mirren's deficiencies we won the game.  Since then we've played three, lost three.  The losing run has hardly seen a shot on target never mind a goal.

The well documented injury crisis and the late arrival of reinforcements still in need of pre-season training are mitigating factors but the players who cross the white line have to do better and they know it.

We were overrun by a fast and physical Killie side and our patched up back four found it difficult to contain them.  They had almost 20 shots on goal, most of them from around 20 yards.  Our strategy relied more on the passing game through midfield but it had only limited success.  There was no penetration through the blue and white ranks ranged against us and Samson has a fairly easy afternoon.

The manager accepted the need for improvement but he felt there was no room for self-pity. "We've got to re-group and show what characters we've got in the dressing room"

St Johnstone, no doubt brimming with confidence following their win against Aberdeen, are at Fir Park next weekend.  If we can end the losing run it will be a mini-triumph.  Realistically we'll be hoping that our season can get back on track after the international break.  If we are able to field a first choice eleven, free of niggling injuries, for the game in Dingwall in mid-September there's a chance that we can recover from the poor start.
