Motherwell move forward

That meeting in the Centenary Suite at Fir Park set out twin goals for the club; avoid relegation and seal a deal with Les Hutchison for the transfer of ownership to the Well society

With memories of the previous season’s play-off drama still fresh, the poor start in the league campaign had prompted a change of manager and the return of McGhee.  He expressed his belief that we would stay in the division and he delivered.  The fifth place we occupied at the season’s end was way beyond most fans’ expectations in November 2015.

The second part of the evening offered little cheer.  Although we had the comfort of an interest free loan from our benefactor the loss (£1M) from the play-off season and the disappointing uptake of Society membership suggested that hard times lay ahead.

But one year on there is a new optimism.  The agreement with Les Hutchison will enable his loan to be repaid “from a percentage of transfer income”.  This means that we have a sustainable model to take the club forward.  So long as we plan expenditure to balance income there is a safe road ahead.  Whether that road keeps us in the Premiership remains to be seen but at least we’ll have a team to support.

Motherwell FC is in a better place than a year ago.  Let’s hope we can repeat that sentence in twelve months time.
