Motherwell start battle with Rangers early

"After discussions between both clubs, Motherwell fans have been allocated 950 tickets for Ibrox for Thursday night’s game, priced at £5," Motherwell said on the official site.

There will be a lot of empty seats in the South Stand on Sunday

"These will be sold from 3.30pm today on a first come, first served basis, with the modest number of fans who have already renewed their 2015/16 season ticket guaranteed a ticket.

"For the 2nd leg, Rangers have been allocated 1,500 tickets for the Maxim Office Park South Stand."

The club has not explicitly revealed the nature of the discussions with Rangers but it is likely we were rebuffed in a request for a higher allocation.

It can then be assumed that the decision was made to cut the Rangers allowance for Fir Park on Sunday from the 4,800 Les Hutchison suggested would be available at the recent Q+A night.

The club certainly deserve credit for standing up for Motherwell fans and giving up cash through ticket sales - though this would be considerably less than usual due to the £10/5 pricing structure and levy to be paid to the SPFL.

But it is a continuation of a questionable precedent in reducing away allocations in pursuit of an extra modicum of home advantage at the expense of fans who simply want to watch their team.

Rangers and Hibs refused each other extra tickets which would have been readily available in their play-off semi-final while Aberdeen and Celtic shut out opposing fans over a squabble earlier in the season.
