Next up - Livingston

The last meeting between the teams was the penultimate game of 2005/6 when a Clarkson goal delivered a 1-0 victory over the already doomed Livingston side.  Looking further back, Faddy will have a memory of the game at the end of season 2002/3 when he scored a hat trick, received a booking and waved farewell to the Motherwell crowd following a crushing 6-2 win as we celebrated the SPL vote that reprieved us from relegation.

As they say in all the financial blurb, 'past performance is no guarantee of a future trend', so there will be no room for complacency.  Stuart McCall has spoken of the disappointment that came from our early cup exits last season and the determination to do better this time.

A look at the SPFL Championship table shows our opponents rooted at the bottom but they will be boosted by their only win at the weekend.   They were a goal down at Dumbarton at the break but a double from McNulty turned the game in Livi’s favour.  John McGlynn is now in charge of the team and he’ll have some familiarity with our set up from his earlier time with Hearts but his priority will be the league struggle.

This game will give McCall a chance to give a few players who normally start on the substitutes bench a start.  Neilsen, McHugh, Lawson and Ainsworth are among those who will hope to impress.  Motherwell are odds on to progress and anything less than a comfortable win will be a let down – here’s to a 3-0 victory.
