Next up - The Rangers

This tie of the round will offer a test to both teams.  Rangers will be keen to show that they are still capable of fielding a team that can succeed at the top level while Motherwell, sitting atop of the SPL, will be desperate to earn their first win at Ibrox since 1997.

McCoist suggested that his side should be considered as outsiders despite the view taken by the bookmakers.  "I'm of the opinion Motherwell should be favourites, of course they should, they're top of the SPL and they're there on merit.  We're a completely and utterly new team that's finding its way, not overnight, we won't develop overnight, but we must take forward and positive steps all along.  I'm not for a second saying we can't beat Motherwell - gee-whiz, of course we can beat Motherwell.  But I would have to say I think they are favourites."

The home team will have the backing of a big support that will regard a win not only as progress in the competition but as some sort of payback for the perceived injustices meted out to their team over the summer.

Most Motherwell fans will avoid the bear pit atmosphere and take advantage of the BBC's live transmission.  Nevertheless, several hundred will watch from the away enclave in the corner at Ibrox and they'll be hoping that the Steelmen's league form will deliver an all too rare victory in Govan.

The last meeting between the teams was a 0-0 only four months ago but while the Motherwell side on Wednesday will be close to that of last season the Rangers eleven will bear little likeness to its former composition.

This will be a big game for the Motherwell men.  On paper we should be the stronger team.  Our players were in the Champions League when our opponents were in the Ramsdens Cup but this game will won or lost in the mindset of our squad.  If they can overcome any mental inhibition and play as they have in recent weeks then the small band of claret and amber supporters will be celebrating a 2-0 triumph.

Remember the last time we were at Ibrox?
