Phil O'Donnell - a year on

While there have been a number of suggestions, the selected option of a pre-match huddle while the fans applaud is probably the best available. The players will be able show their respect while doing something which should also serve to focus them on the crucial 90 minutes ahead and the whole thing can be over and done with by kick-off.

It is right that a tribute is paid every year around this time. O'Donnell will never be forgotten but while we have no need to share our grief with the general public, it is important that Eileen and the rest of his family know that we haven't forgotten. There will always be a place for them at Fir Park.

We also need to think to the long-term future. Too many Motherwell heroes of the past have been allowed to drift away with their names only vaguely recognised by the majority of the fans. O'Donnell, even before his death, was a legend and it is only right future generations know just how big a contribution he made to our club. A local boy made good, he scored in a winning cup final, and made a huge contribution to a third placed finish - unheard of in modern times. He is still our record transfer and then returned to
Fir Park to enjoy an Indian summer at the end of his career. Another cup final, albeit a losing one, followed and he made another huge contribution to the third place we earned last season, even if he sadly couldn't see it achieved.

There is not yet a tradition of a yearly remembrance of Phil but that can only be built through time. The time to start building is tomorrow.
