Players Come, Players Go

Kerr joined us in time for the pre-season in July 2004 on a one year contract. He suffered a bad injury at Love Street (tears to the cruciate and medial ligaments in his left knee) before the season started.

Injuries are always a risk in the football industry and it was quite correct that Motherwell stood by the player and gave him every help in regaining fitness. Naturally, the club wanted to see a return in the investment and Kerr was appreciative of the efforts made on his behalf.

It was not until April 2005 that he was able to make his competitive debut for us when played for the second half against Aberdeen. (We won that game with the help of Jim Hamilton's wonder goal!).

Kerr's contract was extended till May 2007 and he served a full season in 2005/6 and 2006/7 without further serious injury.

Malpas is quoted as saying, "That's what football is all about these days. It was Brian's prerogative to weigh up his options and speak with other clubs. We offered what we thought was a suitable deal. It was up to him whether he wanted to sign the contract or not and it looks like he's decided to move elsewhere."

The effect of the Bosman ruling on the nature of the relationship between players and their employers has been dramatic. Malpas knows only too well from his time at Dundee United and the bizarre regime operated by Jim McLean that players were entitled to more control over their careers but the current pattern of short term contracts has all but destroyed the building of strong bonds between players and fans.

Malpas summed it up nicely, "But life goes on and I'll do all I can to make sure this club continues to go forward and we'll bring in players who can help us do that."
