Plenty to Look Forward to At Fir Park

While acknowledging the current run of poor form (six games since a win and four without a goal), there is no reason for pessimism. Our small squad has delivered results way above the predicted level for the second consecutive season.

Injuries and the odd suspension have depleted our ranks of late and the fact that most of our senior players have been unable to have regular games has lead inevitably to a series of defeats. Marshall, Leitch, O’Donnell and Paterson have all been posted missing this month and Scott McDonald is just regaining full fitness after a long absence.

As luck would have it we have been on the road in four out of the last five games and it will be good to get back to Fir Park on Saturday to face Hibs. Of the ten remaining SPL fixtures before the split we have an even balance of home and away matches.

The next series of games will give us a chance to cement our top six status. After the game on Saturday we will face Dundee, Hearts, Dunfermline, Dundee United, Livingston and Inverness before a final triple against Rangers, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock. With any luck it could be that we are ‘safe’ before Killie come to Fir Park in mid-April.

That we are able to debate the possibility of a top half finish (with the accompanying financial bonus) rather than having to contemplate a relegation dogfight is a tribute to the team’s success thus far.

The intervening CIS Cup semi is a bonus. With any luck Leitch, O’Donnell and Paterson will be fit and we should have a fair chance of visit to Hampden on March 20.

Yet again it is time for the fans to turn up in numbers and offer the team every encouragement. The next few weeks will determine the success of the season.

Come on ye ‘Well!
