Rip it up and start again

There was a time when such an event was so rare that fans were encouraged to turn up at Fir Park to remove souvenir squares of turf for a small donation to the youth development fund.   In recent years the laying down of turf or reseeding has become part of the annual maintenance.  Soon we’ll be changing the grass as often as the strips!

This year’s work is a fairly simple replacement of the top inch and the addition of some binding material before new seed is sown next week.  The job of the extra layer is to reduce the rate that water flows though the soil.  Presumably that will stop the drying and crumbling of the surface which has been so obvious over the winter.

The seeding will take place a month earlier than last year and the club expect that the pitch will be ready for action by mid-July, in time for the anticipated Europa League games.
