Ross County 24h on

How to put a damper on your weekend?  Put on a claret and amber scarf and turn up at Fir Park on a Saturday afternoon.

The bus load of County fans that made a generous donation to the Well Bois food bank collection were repaid handsomely for their kindness by the gift of a second half goal that allowed the return of three valuable points to Dingwall.

Ainsworth tries his luck

While the happy coach returned north, Motherwell fans tramped home with the thought that trips to Dunfermline and Dumfries are becoming a real possibility in the near future.  There was nothing in Saturday's performance to suggest that we can fight our way out of the play-off position.  The County goal seemed to knock the stuffing from our players.

Griffiths can consider himself unlucky that his first appearance did not end with a clean sheet.  He was a spectator for most of the afternoon and performed well on the very few calls to action.  He and Samson will be able to discuss the failings of their defensive team-mates.

It was clear that we lacked the creative flair needed to crack an efficient defence.  What was required was an energetic storming of the opposition penalty area but we lacked belief and conviction.  Moult was almost static and it was not until the late addition of Bowman that we had any pace in the centre.  We saw no exhilarating runs from Cadden and though there was a supply of crosses, mainly from Frear, they caused no problem for the defence.

The goal was shambles.  Only Jules knows why he elected to play the ball from the dead ball line rather than accept a goal kick and within seconds we had conceded.  It was another in a long series of self inflicted wounds.

And so we face Hamilton at Douglas Park next week.  The prize for the loser is likely to be a place in the play-off.
