St Mirren - 24h On

The cup game on Tuesday gives the players a chance to find the missing sparkle without the pressure of league points at stake. Following the cup replay we have Inverness, Celtic, Kilmarnock, Gretna and Hearts at Fir Park. The 'away' game against Gretna makes this unusual string of games possible but it does provide a wonderful opportunity.

Mark, what went wrong today?

Our ability to exploit this opening might depend on what Mark McGhee can do in the remaining two weeks of the transfer window. Our squad looks very threadbare and he will be well aware that we need several players if our challenge is to be maintained.

McGhee has not said a lot in recent weeks (understandably) about his hopes for this spell of transfer activity but he has made it clear that he doesn't want to bring in players for the sake of it and that any incomers should be at least of the quality that we have at present.

The main factor which limits his flexibility is finance. His budget constraints mean that he has to compete not only with our SPL rivals but also with the lowers reaches of the English leagues. Our collective memory from the days of administration should remind us of the importance of staying in the black. Anyone who suggests that we should spend beyond our means needs to be reminded of the risk that entails.

But we have a important cup game to entertain us this week.
Paterson's suspension will no apply for this tie and the same eleven which produced the stirring fightback at Tynecastle are likely to be given the task of taking us to the sixth round.

Come on ye 'Well.
