Too soon to judge

That is perhaps an exaggeration. Those in the latter camp are likely willing to give Ian Baraclough another four or five games in a run against the likely bottom half sides before sharpening the knives.

Because while it is not forgotten that Baraclough kept us up in the play-offs last season, it is also not forgotten how he put us there in the first place. The disastrous form January-February, the appalling efforts away from home and signings, Marvin Johnson aside, which range from dreadful to mere inadequate are fresh in the memory.

We have played 26 league games under Baraclough's leadership and collected 28 points. It is hard to say that 26 matches is not a fair period to judge him and even harder to say that is not a shockingly bad return.

Time is running out for him to prove he deserves further months to continue the rebuilding job he has started.

The alternative view is that we should regard that start of this season as the beginning of the Baraclough era.  After all he inherited a team in trouble and managed to keep us in the top flight.  Only now, with his choice of players and a full pre-season’s preparation can we start to judge his performance.

The first round of fixtures will be complete in mid-October and the second round ends with the Ne’rday game.   Those would seem to be appropriate way points.  Unless we’re well adrift and/or hugely embarrassed in the cup competitions we’ll have the same manager in May.

As ever, the players in claret and amber deserve our support and there’s no better time to get behind them that in Perth this weekend.
