Top six joy for the Mighty 'Well

Last updated : 09 April 2016 By Firparkcorner

After last season's play-off drama many of the Fir Park faithful would have settled for 10th place but the wonderful series of results since Valentine's Day has catapulted us up the table.  Now, despite our loss to Celtic on Saturday afternoon, we are rewarded with an outside chance of a place in the Europa League.

The certainty that comes with this boost means that the manager can begin to plan for next season.  The financial advantage that comes with every step up the league ladder will be a comfort to the club as it moves to fan ownership.  It should also be reflected in the player budget.

A top six venue

Although the final composition of the top half will not be confirmed until midweek we will need three away and two home fixtures if a balance is to be achieved after 38 matches.  Trips to Parkhead, Pittodrie and Dingwall are likely while Hearts and St Johnstone may be our visitors.

Our return to the upper reaches suggests that last season was an anomaly.  The record over the last seven years demonstrates a fairly consistent final position.  The list, staring with our current place, is; (4), 11, 2,2,3,6,5.

With no reason to look behind the team has nothing to lose by fighting to retain fourth spot and the chance of avoiding the July League Cup sections.  Much better to have another European jaunt!
