United 24h On

Although our guys did well it has to be admitted that United were less than impressive. Despite their considerable height advantage they were unable to breech a back four which had Jim Paterson in central defence for half the game and also had to survive for the last ten minutes with only ten men.

Our midfield lacked experience and with Lasley, O'Donnell and Kerr missing there was no option but to hope that the replacements could fill the gap. Again, they lasted the course and should benefit from the experience. Vaducz had another chance to get to grips with the fast challenges which characterises our frantic league and a few more games should let us judge his capabilities.

The referee's performance has been analysed at length elsewhere. At least we can take comfort on the assumption that he has to do better next week - surely?

Now that any hope of a top six finish is now wishful thinking, it is time for the management team to consider the rest of the season as a grooming period for next season's campaign. McGarry and Fitzpatrick are the latest to be awarded contract extensions and an extended run may be on the cards regardless of our current injury crisis.

There is a break of more than a fortnight following Tuesday night's game against
Aberdeen. There will be time to help the injured recover but also time to reflect that we have survived for another season in the top flight. In a year when we took on a new management team and when the SPL table in mid September saw us at the bottom of the heap, we should be grateful.
