Can 'Well win the League Cup derby?

The League Cup meeting gives McCall’s men a chance to redress the imbalance in our performances over recent years.  Motherwell’s high finishing position in the league has not been matched with the showing in any cup competition and the ending of that failure is one that the manager and his team have as a priority this season.

Neither Ojamaa nor Ainsworth made an appearance on Sunday and both might be expected to feature on the artificial surface at New Douglas Park.  John Sutton will be keen to score for the third consecutive game but we’ll need others to step up.  We have hit the net only four times in our seven league outings to date.

Our opponents have enjoyed a bright start to their season.  Following an opening day loss they produced a four game winning streak and two draws.  From all accounts they have played well but a number of injuries (Canning, Tena and Antoine-Curier) forced a shuffle for last weekend’s 0-0 with Kilmarnock.  They finished that game with help from a number of their younger players.

The last League Cup meeting between the pair resulted in an extra time win for Hamilton at Fir Park six years ago to the day.  Our last visit to NDP was the embarrassment against Albion Rovers.  It’s time for a positive outcome but it may be a long night after a 90 minutes score of 1-1.
