Motherwell host Dons as McGhee returns to Fir Park

The media will be relishing the thought of Saturday's game at Fir Park. Not only is it likely to be a decent and entertaining contest but their headlines are practically written already thanks to the return of Mark McGhee. Regardless of whether elements of the home support embarrass themselves with certain chants, we can look forward to pun-filled newspapers on Sunday and Monday.

Mark who?
However, that shouldn't be allowed to overshadow the fact that this is a huge game for us. We are currently fifth and four points clear of Aberdeen - a win would not only move us seven clear of them but, assuming St Mirren don't upset Hibs, we will be eight clear in the top six. A healthy margin by anyone's standards.

On the other hand, a loss brings Aberdeen to within touching distance and results elsewhere could make our top six position look decidedly precarious.

Both teams have squad issues going into the game as though we expect Ruddy, Moutaouakil and Hammell to return, Slane, Hutchison, Fitzpatrick, Smith and Humphrey are all injured. The Dons will be without the suspended Maguire while Aluko, Fyvie and Diamond are all injured. Grassi is also unlikely to recover.

If it comes down to a battle of wits we can be confident Gannon will triumph but it may be that too much is being read into the respective qualities of the managers. One group of players will simply have a slightly better day at the office than the other and they will triumph - let's hope it's us and we pick up a 2-0 victory.
