The Year in Review 2015 (2)

The manager, now six months in post, added a dozen new faces to the squad before the summer window closed.  Between loan players and new signings the list read - Ripley, Chalmers, (Laing), Kennedy, Ainsworth), Taylor, Grimshaw, Clarkson, Fletcher, Moult, (McDonald), Robinson, (McDonald) and Samson was added in mid-September.

Fir Park in August for the visit of Aberdeen

The campaign opened well enough with an early goal from Fletcher giving us three points in Inverness but it was soon clear that we were in trouble.  After consecutive losses to Dundee United, Hearts, Aberdeen and St Johnstone we narrowly avoided the embarrassment of a League Cup defeat to East Fife before recording the first home win of the season with the help of a Moult penalty against Kilmarnock.

Criticism of the manager grew when another two league games passed without a win.  The third week of September saw us facing Morton in the League Cup and we lined up against the lower league side with one striker on the field.  It was an awful display and the defeat signalled an end to Baraclough's time at Fir Park.

Stephen Craigan looked after the team for a couple of games before Mark McGhee returned for his second spell in charge.  His appointment was welcomed and opposed by sections of the 'Well support but by the year's end most admitted that we were in better shape.

In October the club and fans paid tribute to the great Joe Wark.  He was a one club man held in the greatest esteem at Fir Park.  His passing was marked at before our game against Celtic.

Joe Wark remembered

McGhee took some time to settle on his best eleven but eventually we looked comfortable with Moult and McDonald leading the line, Lasley, Grimshaw, Pearson and Johnson in midfield with Law, McManus, Hall and Hammell  at the back.

The highlight at the end of the year was the a rare 2-1 win at Parkhead.  Despite losing the opening goal we recovered to take the match with a brace from Moult.  It was our first away win against Celtic  for seven years and an indication that the team had the potential to move up the table.

Off the park the club and the Well Society struggled to drive up the number of fans who were prepared to commit to the community ownership model.  The news that the 2014/15 season had resulted in a £1M loss did little to enthuse supporters and Les Hutchison reminded us that his loan had to be repaid.

Let's hope for a better 2016.
